The Audubon House was originally built for Capt. John Geiger, a local wrecker and harbor pilot that lived here in the early 19th century. However, artist and ornithologist John James Audubon, who stayed here in 1832 while painting the local birds and wildlife, made the house famous. Audubon found 18 new birds for 'Birds of America' during his stay in Key West, doing much of the sketching in the Audubon House. Visitors can view twenty-eight original Audubon works as well as rare examples of period furniture and houseware. The ambience of the Audubon House is meant to depict the early 19th century household of an affluent Key West resident like Capt. Geiger. Visitors can take a self-guided tour (narrated by an audio tape) of the Audubon House and tropical gardens. Signs identify rare indigenous plants and trees and informational booklets will provide you with additional information.
